OH MA GAD. How is October over already? I’ve got such mixed feelings, but mostly I feel sad. I build up to this month every single year and while the past was all about my birthday and half term break, the previous five years have been about pumpkins, Halloween and falling leaves. It’s just a magical time of year basically.
ANYHOO! Happy Halloween! I can totally feel the spookiness in the air and I’m loving it. Being an October baby it’s a super special time for me anyway, and it’s my late grandma’s birthday today too. How are you celebrating? Or have you celebrated? I’m off to an event tonight, but I think after that I’ll snuggle up with some pumpkin spice and watch Hocus Pocus (again). This month has been jam packed for me and I really wanted to look back on all the amazing things I’ve done.
Forever giving myself a challenge that I’m never sure I can complete (hehe), this year I decided to take my make up to the next level and create 31 looks in October. To be honest, once I’d done five my face was raw and I wasn’t sure it was realistic… but luckily at that point I was working freelance and started planning and creating looks back in August when the light was a little better, so that played to my advantage.
I’ve never been confident when it comes to makeup, I only really started playing with it a year ago so I was fully aware that I was creating looks other people might have been doing so much better- I think the trick to make up is to zone out from everyone else and try and create a look that’s uniquely your own- I think you can tell as the month went on that my looks got a little more refined and were more led by my ideas as opposed to classic looks. I totally recommend the challenge to anyone who loves Halloween or painting their face- the feedback was AH-MAZING, people have been so supportive and I’ve been a bit overwhelmed at points, what a confidence boost (who know who you are, you magical people).
The Bloggers Blog Awards
Right at the end of September I attended the Bloggers Blog Awards, but I’m definitely counting this as one of my October highlights because I just wanna talk about how magical it was. I went solo but met some fabulous ladies on the way, before hanging out with bloggers I’d admired for so long. It was an amazing experience and getting out of my comfort zone and travelling to an event was all worth it!
The Kat Von D Beauty Event
*Hyperventilates* I still think I pretty much dreamt the fact that I went to a Kat Von D event. Amongst some of the most inspiring and amazing MUAs, we also had a talk from KVD’s Artistry Collective before meeting and chatting with them- it was too amazing (you can read more about that here). I also met a few really cool bloggers like Helen Anderson and Nancydreamin (she was such a babe, can’t wait to see her again!)
Getting my Hands Dirty with DIY
You’ll know this already being a blogger, but don’t you often feel like it’s a second full time job? If you’re not planning content, you’re taking photos, scheduling tweets, reading other’s blogs or writing posts- all of that combined with all the real-world stuff is a little brain-numbing. With that being said, I kind of couldn’t wait to start doing DIYs, it’s ridiculously therapeutic, and a great escape from work/home life. From painting pumpkins and planting cemetariums, to making Halloween wreaths and painting other’s faces, I’ve caught the craft bug and I’m sure you’ll be seeing lots of weird creations from me soon!
Each year in October, I’ve always attempted to watch 31 films in 31 days, some years I’m successful, others I’m totally not! This year I came up with the idea of trying to include my followers too, hence the HallowQueenClub was born! Navigating Mailchimp was a little difficult at first, but once I’d got the hang of it and people signed up (yay!) the idea was to send out seven films every seven days. Unfortunately starting a new job meant I had a lot less time to focus on this and it took a backseat for a week which I felt super guilty about! Since then its been very bitty and I’ve very much been a let down with it- I think I’ve learnt that maybe I can’t do it all… All in all though, it’s been a fab experience and I’ll definitely be carrying on with my newsletter. You can sign up here!
Starting a New Job
New job equals fresh start, right? For me this month has been filled with a load of ‘new’, the most significant being my editor role for a travel company. I’ve been loving the change of industry, and can’t wait to get settled in!
Another challenge I took on this month was posting on my blog every single day, to work with my #mariashorrorstory social media feed and my DIY blog mission. I’d done this kind of challenge before, but not since last year (Blogmas) and I wanted to get super organised with all my posts- I managed to do most of them two weeks prior to them going live, but hey ho life gets in the way and some of them were written the night/day before hehe. I’m not too sure whether I’ll be doing it again this Christmas, but I have a blog post coming next week on how I prep for a months-worth of blog posts!
Working With Brands
Back in August, I got a little eager and contacted a number of brands about working with them for Halloween! I soon realised I’d been a bit premature, but got a lot of replies later on in September about working with a few companies and it’s been super fun. From Koko Couture wigs, to Hobbycraft who I’ve been fangirling over for years, to the wonderful people at Ice Watch who fully accepted the level of crazy I reach in terms of my looks (hehe) and of course Margate’s own Dreamland, who invited me to their press preview of Screamland- it’s been a blast! I totally advise reaching out to brands before an event like Halloween and asking if you can work with them- you won’t regret it.
My birthday was amazing, for the main reason that I didn’t have any plans or expectations. I knew I wanted to go to a pumpkin patch, and watch Hocus Pocus, but apart from that I had no clue. I was pretty much spoilt by Kayle and my family, and couldn’t have asked for a better day- 27 is going to be a good year/age I hope!
Saturday 28th saw my Halloween/birthday party and again, I had pretty much no expectations with it- I just wanted to nail the decor and have a good time really! It was so nice that Kayle’s cousins (and my friends) Lloyd and LT were able to drive all the way from Holland for the occasion, and a number of my brother’s friends came too which was amazing. So many laughs and one of my favourite parties to date, for sure.
What were your favourite parts of October?
