The wonderful people at ICE Watch set me a spooktacular challenge this month: to show two very different sides of myself, a dark and a light, to celebrate their black and white ICE glam watches.
I loved the concept of showing a dark and light side to your personality, as I feel as if we really pick and choose which sides we want to show.
WHITE: LONELY AS A CLOUD
For this look, I wanted to seem ethereal, but also mysterious, vulnerable and almost melancholy. I was inspired by clown-like silhouettes with striking red lips and rosy cheeks, and yet I wanted the face to be void of colour, soaked in tears and sprinkled with silver.
White is a blank canvas, it pretty much goes with any other colour, and it’s can seem almost transparent at times. This whitewash symbolises my vulnerable side- susceptible to negativity and insecurity- the bare bones on show (represented by the crow in the cage). I was heavily influenced by poem ‘I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud’ by William Wordsworth, and had the idea for a concept relating to his words. There’s been a number of points in my life where I’ve felt desperately lonely, so I got really inspired to create a character that mimicked that feeling.
The soft, buttery ICE glam watch reminded me of a cloud almost, and that’s where I drew inspiration for my brows too; just like the poem.
” I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o’er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze. ”
I want my blush to be stark, yet harsh- the rosy nose indicates I’ve shed tears before this-further adding to the vulnerability.
On a lighter note, let’s talk about makeup and accessories! I created my white face using The Body Shop’s Shade Adjusting Drops mixed with Primark beauty’s Ghost Foundation as a base. I added blush to my cheeks and on my nose too, before dotting freckles on my nose using a liquid liner. I covered my eyebrows with mini pom poms from Hobby Craft, and completed the look with glitter-covered lashes and a striking glitter red lip- Kat Von D’s glimmer veil in ‘Razzle’.
BLACK: MUSIC OF THE STORM
If you haven’t guessed already, I’m a huge poetry fan so my black ICE Watch-inspired look was also influenced by a poem close to me-Walt Whitman’s Proud Music of the Storm. It’s a fab representation of the other half of personality- loud, confident, proud- it’s symbolised in with this thunderstorm-esque makeup look.
Dark and brooding, but also passionate, relenting, and spooky- it’s the side of myself I like to show most of the time! What I love most about Whitman’s poem is the exclamations, and how it’s all-encompassing and enthusiastic which is how I like to see my approach to everything I tackle in life.
“PROUD music of the storm!
Blast that careers so free, whistling across the prairies!
Strong hum of forest tree-tops! Wind of the mountains!
Personified dim shapes! you hidden orchestras!”
I added metallic rain to my cloud hat to compliment the rose gold details on the watch– I’ve been wearing this sleek piece from day one, it literally goes with everything I wear.
Now let’s talk about the makeup! This one was created mostly with Kat Von D’s magical products, With the Saint and Sinner eye palette used on the face, The Body Shop’s Shade Adjusting Drops to draw the lightning and the whole thing was dotted with Lime Crime’s Xenon liquid lipstick.
The lips were created by sticking pearls onto my lips before covering with Lime Crime’s Black Velvet velvetine.
Which look is your favourite? Which watch is your favourite?
