How to Dress Like Your 90s Style Icon

This season is on a nostalgic trip back to 90’s styling, with bardot cuts, bodysuits, slip silhouettes and double denim re-emerging for spring.
Nail the look with some help from the 90’s style icons of popular culture; from the polished Cher in Clueless, to the leisure looks of Gwen Stefani.

The Look: Empire Records centres itself around a group of teens who want to save the independent music store they work at from the clutches of a larger chain. Their rebellion is reflected in Liv Tyler’s character Corey Mason, whose style abandons stereotypical female fashion in favour of oversized plaid shirts and lace up boots.
How to Achieve it: Brimming with nostalgic patterns and fluffy knits, re-create Corey’s look with a gingham skirt and duck egg knit. Keep it comfy with hi-top plimsolls and accessorise with a 90s essential- the metallic mini backpack.

The Look: Admired as a prominent child actor in the 80s, Drew Barrymore circa 1990s came into her own as a style star, sporting an array of colours and textures. Think tie dye, oversized denim and biker jackets, all embodying her rebel chic look that took her from flower child to wild child.
How to Achieve it: Steal her style with staple bleached denim, keeping the jacket oversized for that nod to retro styling. Adopt raw hemmed jeans for a touch of grunge, keeping it crisp with a white crop and finish with a flower choker.

The Look: Forever celebrated as one of pop culture’s most prominent style icons, Cher Horowitz of Clueless has a plethora of covetable outfits in her revolving wardrobe. Re-imagining the school girl style code, her look is control and polished with a hint of maturity.
How to Achieve it: Tailored pieces are key when it comes to Cher’s look, and this is where a structured blue shirt and A-line mini skirt come into play. Complete with a pair of patent block heels and smart shoulder bag for an effortless finish.

The Look: The legendary face of the ska-punk movement, Gwen Stefani took the mid-90s by storm. With her signature white blonde locks and athletic build, the No Doubt frontwoman often put sporting influences at the forefront of her everyday style, all wrapped up with a bindi and tiny head buns.
How to Achieve it: Keep it laid back like Gwen with a khaki bomber jacket and hi-top plimsolls for that nod to leisure, adding more structured touches with cropped culottes. Team with a 90s favourite- the crop top, but bring the look into the new season with some colourful stripes.

The Look: During the 90’s, supermodels not only ruled the runways but captivated the world with their polished looks and editorial appeal. Cindy Crawford  exuded such glamour, even in a simple bodysuit and pair of distressed denim jeans.
How to Achieve it: Adopt the original super’s look with a crisp white bodysuit, scooped at the neck. Team with a pair of rolled up girlfriend jeans and accessorise with a paisley print headscarf.

The Look: During the 90s, a young Kate Moss lent her presence to endless magazine covers, catwalks and campaigns as she charmed the world with her beauty and wit. Famously friends with fellow model Naomi Campbell, she made the slip dress somewhat of a signature.
How to Achieve it: Get Kate’s evening wear look with a lace-trimmed slip dress and subtle ankle strap heels, adding a textured finish with a fluffy pink choker.

The Look: It was all about girl power as the Spice Girls invaded the 90s music scene with liberating lyrics, punchy personalities and outlandish style.
How to Achieve it: With each girl owning their own looks, slip shapes, crop tops and sporting slogans act as the foundations for the Spice Girls style.

The Look: Aside from the quick-wit, in-jokes and romantic storylines of beloved sitcom Friends, characters Monica, Phoebe and Rachel changed the way women dressed in the 90s. From Rachel’s girl-next-door charm to Phoebe’s effortless elegance and Monica’s mismatching vibes, the series provided it’s characters with true style personalities that still live on.
How to Achieve it: Dress like the trio in cold shoulder cuts, snug bardot knits and high waist jeans, finished with a pair of on-trend combat boots.
