Makeup Month One: #Draguary

Ugh January was such a DRAG, wasn’t it?! Sorry, if there’s a pun to play, you can bet yo’ bottom dollar I’m going to take it…

If you follow me on ‘the grid’, ‘insta’ or ‘that-annoying-algorithmn-filled-app’, you’ll have seen that I set myself a rather big challenge – to create a number of looks over the next 12 months, with each month being dedicated to a theme. I basically thought this might be more cohesive than a 100 Days of Makeup challenge, and I could really concentrate on the elements of life that I’m passionate about! (You can follow all my looks so far on #miasmakeupmonth)

January played host to #Draguary and GUYS. It was SO fun. I created a mixture of looks dedicated to kweens I’d found on Instagram, the amazing characters of Drag Race and I even created a look for myself! If you missed any of them on Instagram, or just want to know more, read on!

LOOK ONE: BARB-WIRE
My rule when I’m doing a months-worth of looks, is that I prep at least a few before the month begins. This one was actually done on NYE (yes, that’s right, I spent NYE painting my face and watching Lego Batman), so a spontaneous one the night before I actually ended up posting first! It was inspired by the amazing Lillofficial, who I found on Instagram a while ago and have been in love with ever since.

Ironically, this one also took the longest to paint, as I hadn’t covered my brows before (other than the odd look) and the level of detail was intense! I learnt that a cakey foundation was my best friend here, full coverage was key.

Second to that, a vibrant shade of eyeshadow made the look pop. All of my black details were created using my trusty Kat Von D Tattoo Liner. If a girl can’t rely on that, what can she rely on, aimrite?

LOOK TWO: PEARL
A RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant HAD to be featured earlier on in the month, and who better than Pearl. She might not be a standout figure to y’all, but I fell in love with her sassiness, and her sexyness tbh. Her drag at the moment feels like a kind of ‘Old Mother Hubbard went and had a sexual awakening’ vibe and I. AM. LIVING.

This one was definitely one of the more refined drag looks of the month, with the focus on framing the eyes and creating the perfect wing.

LOOK THREE: BRATZ EYEZ
Miss Gay Mattes. What can I say? Doll eye makeup is very much in on the ‘gram, but I didn’t feel the urge to recreate the look until I saw Miss Mattes’ bloody gorgeous interpretation, the best part being the imperfect style she has. The look was all about creating a huge eye, but also attempting to create a level of depth and height above the lids as well.

This look was also my first attempt to create a natural-looking brow, which I’m now obsessed with trying to recreate, FYI.

LOOK FOUR: BLEEDING BABE
Possibly my favourite look of the pile, the whole of #Draguary was kinda based around me interpreting an Ellis Atlantis look if I’m honest. She’s bloody perfect, a drag chameleon I say. There were so many looks to choose from, but I chose this one because it gave me glam, with a slice of gore.

The eyebrow placing was a little hard as it overlapped my natural brow, and the eyeliner to simulate hair was HARD AF but I’m in love with this look – definitely wanna grow and try something similar again.

LOOK FIVE: FLY MY PRETTY
So at this point, I’m pretty much certan most of you guys were like WTF IS DIS? Club Kid looks are my ultimate fave, I love how out there and inventive they are, and Imp Kid was the perfect person to go to for inspiration.

Their signature prop is hair nets piled with balloons, which had me living – I couldn’t wait to re imagine the look. Yellow face paint trowelled on and paper eyelashes made, I secured the hairnet to my hair and a few clips, and voila! the club kid is born.

My favourite part of this look was playing with the light and shade of a coloured texture, and the way that the rose shades from the blusher sat perfectly against the buttercup-coloured complexion.

LOOK SIX: BUBBLEGUM BETTY
Lemme give a little bit of background on Bubblegum Betty. I basically sometimes get the urge to colour myself blue (da ba dee da ba die) and I kinda thought omg, why not make this into a drag look?

and so this last-minute ad hoc look was born! It’s definitely not my best, but it’s super cute and I’m fairly pleased with it, but I have to say it’s mostly down to stellar products like Kat Von D and Primark beauty palettes.

LOOK SEVEN: KALEIDOSCOPIC MESS
This one was my second dedication to Lill Official, and I have to say my least favourite look, but I’m including it regardless – cos no-one is perfect – except Keira Knightley, she’s a goddess. Anyway, back to the point…

Rainbow.Drag.Vomit – these are the three words I would use to describe this look! it’s messy yet colourful and I loved the idea of the diseased-look lips. I was disappointed by the eyeshadow shades I achieved however, and the brows are DREADFUL. I made the mistake of using face paint – which I quickly learnt from.

LOOK EIGHT: IS SHE HUNGRY
If you haven’t heard of, or don’t follow the artistry of Isshehungry, who are you?? Known for creating looks for artists like Bjork, I just HAD to attempt to create something a fraction of the standard she produces makeup-wise. It was all about the partially blocked-out brow, and creating negative space amongst intense colour.

I kept it fairly muted with light purple patches, and used some trusty concealer to get some clean lines in there. I tried to keep it artsy with some serious faces, but couldn’t help when Kayle told me I looked like a honey-roasted ham… I’m basically a hammy lavender bug here.

LOOK NINE: TRIXIE MATTEL
If you hadn’t already guessed, the reason why I decided to do #Draguary in January was because RuPaul’s All Stars 3 was set to return at the end of the month. I had a number of ideas for looks, but at the last minute decided to do a poll, giving my followers a choice of four looks they would like me to do, based on their fave contestants. Of course you guys chose Trixie!

She’s a hot mess, but in a good way. Basically vertical eyeliner, glitter everywhere… she’s a bubblegum-pink dream. I actually had so much fun with this one, and it was the first and only drag look I filmed, mainly because these looks took upwards of 2-3 hours!

Which look was your favourite? If you loved my looks, be sure to follow me on the gram, and pin my pics too!

I live for RuPaul’s Drag race and for drag queens and your looks are absolutely stunning! I love all of them, especially Bleeding Babe and Trixie Mattel. You look like Trixie’s twin!
