It’s been 12 months since I shut down my two separate Blogger pages and set sail on a writing adventure- new domain, new name and some definite ups and downs! I’m marking the blogiversary by chatting about all the things I’ve learned so far.
GETTING YOUR OWN DOMAIN IS HARD
Oh ma lordy! If you knew me before this delightful site, you’ll remember I had two blogs on Blogspot, one for fashion (specifically celeb based) and the other for music reviews. After years of juggling both and kind of failing (oops) I decided I wanted to create a blog that was a bit more ‘me’ and voila, Life With Maria was born *cue crying baby sound*
After initially buying a domain name (including several variations of blog name I wanted, but were already taken, sigh) I then chose a WordPress template I thought would work. Multiple failed attempts to install said template saw me enlist the help of one of Kayle’s developer friends (praise Jesus) who got everything running for me, just as I realised I hated the template I had chosen! £60 later and I found my dream layout…
From pricing to coding the website, it’s fiddly work but I have to say, it’s really worth getting your own domain if you want to really make your own stamp on your blog. Blogger is just so limiting.
YOU CAN’T WONDER THE BLOGOSPHERE ALONE
If someone asked me where I went wrong with blogging, it would be thinking I could just write a blog post and post it, and that’s it. This year more than ever I’ve felt such a strong connection with fellow bloggers; I’ve seen so many supportive individuals popping up in my comments time and time again and I honestly don’t know whether I would have continued without that motivation. The best part? I’ve been loving reading other people’s blogs, seeing what bloggers are tweeting, getting daily inspiration from some of the most talented people on the internet- it’s honestly just a breath of fresh air.
MY BLOGGING STYLE REALLY CHANGED
And like, I mean REALLY changed. Before I got my own domain, I was scared to post pretty much anything too personal, including a simple outfit picture. Life With Maria speaks for itself really and I think I came to the realisation that if I want to live up to the name, I had to start being a little more open.
In fact it was only a matter of months ago that I really sat down and started these chatty blogs about things I was going through in my life. I always had a fear that no-one would really be interested in what I had to say, hence why I often hid behind generalised celebrity or fashion posts but I couldn’t be more happy with the website I have now. It’s more ‘me’ than ever and the best part is that I’m receiving so much support for that!
MY CONFIDENCE SKY-ROCKETED
Okay so I’ve always been partial to the odd selfie on Instagram, but I’ve really felt so much love and acceptance to just be me on my blog and the feedback is awesome. Even on those days where I don’t feel so hawt I always feel like there is someone from the community there to offer a little pick-me-up and I only hope that I’m always there for someone else to do the same!
I’VE PLUCKED UP THE COURAGE TO MEET ONLINE FRIENDS
This one’s a big one! Some of the people I’ve chatted to for YEARS I’d never got round to meeting, which was pretty ridiculous but what with busy lives and losing track of time, it’s been inevitable. This year I’ve met so many new blogger friends though and it’s been so refreshing to have that IRL connection! From old blogger friends like Shu, to new ones like Laura, Millie, Georgie and Tim. My next dream is to get everyone I love in the blogosphere round mine for a mahoosive Halloween party- that would be AH-MAZING.
AND.. I WENT TO MY FIRST BLOGGER EVENT!
*SQUEEEE* This was something I honestly didn’t think I’d be doing for a good while. I’d been to New Look press events (that’s cheating!) but to be invited was fab and I had such a good time. I wrote up my survival guide to your first blogger event, you can read it HERE.
How old is your blog? And what have you learnt from having your own website?
PS: So sorry for the phallic-ness of my balloon hehe!
