As you will know if you read my blog, I’ve set myself a little challenge over the next six months and David Mitchell’s Slade House was first on my list. I’m a HUGE horror/thriller fan, so this one was right up my street; and fans of Cloud Atlas (which Mitchell also wrote) will really enjoy the multi-dimensions to this strange and wondrous tale!
Halloween and haunted houses are EVERYTHING to me, so a house that draws a victim in at the end of October every nine years? Count me in. Mitchell’s imaginings are so fresh, and his story telling pulls you in from the first pages. If you’re like me and rely on a good book to distract you from the seemingly never ending commute, I totally recommend this one.
Setting the scene with a mysterious yet ominous house, the reader gets to know the supernatural goings on over five stories that took place from the 70s to the present day. These tiny novellas then climax at the end of the novel and we learn the fate of the characters we so lovingly cared about.
Packed with cultural references for a twinge of nostalgia, spattered with humour and rife with all things superhuman; Slade House is the amalgamation of all your favourite spooky tales rolled into one.
Let me know what you thought of Slade House!
I rate it:
